The Generator Sputters

Nebraska used to be the star of the American economy, leading the pack and showing others how to generate jobs. Lately, though...not so much. The state has hit a bit of a growth slump, leaving experts wondering if the economic engine has finally run out of gas or if it just needs a solid tune-up (or at least a good wrench-smack to get it out of neutral).

Here are Five Fast Facts on Nebraska's recent lack of job growth:

  1. 🏆 Good 'Ol Days - Less than a decade ago, the state won a major economic development award for landing the most projects per capita and regularly outperformed neighboring states. MVP of job creation? Yup.
  1. 🖐️ Not So Fast - A new analysis suggests Nebraska has missed out on about 70k jobs compared to where it could have been if growth had kept up. That’s like losing an entire city’s worth of jobs somewhere between “we had it” and “oops.”
  1. 😥 Falling Behind - Since around 2010, Nebraska has trailed regional job growth instead of leading it, while neighboring states added tens of thousands of jobs. While everyone else is running the race, Nebraska stopped to tie its shoe…for 15 years.
  1. 🤦 Buffet Of Failure - Worker shortages, fewer young people staying (aka “brain drain”), expensive housing, lack of childcare, and not enough high-paying jobs have all contributed. So it’s not just one problem - it’s like a whole buffet of 'em.
  1. 👀 What's That Over There? - Cuts to economic development programs, 27% fewer staff, and policies that made some companies ineligible for incentives show that the focus on growth has simply not been present like it once was. Nebraska got distracted, and as a result may have accidentally misplaced some growth.

🔥Bottom line: Nebraska is having a bit of a mid-life crisis where it can't quite remember where it put its economic momentum. After years of being the gold standard for how to run a state, it has now realized it's nowhere near that. The state needs to shift out of neutral and back into drive...and do it quickly. The good news is at least some leaders are starting to notice and try new ideas. Will it be the jump start we need? Time will tell.
