In a world where AI is supposed to take over ALL THE JOBS, the hottest gig in tech right now turns out to be...writing words like a human! We've all seen the alternative, and there's even a term for it: AI slop. Though AI is highly proficient at spewing forth tons of words, companies are begging for real people who can tell real stories. It appears that AI's mess is making word wizards the new rock stars of Silicon Valley.
Here are Five Fast Facts about the hottest jobs in tech right now:
- 💰💰 Crazy Money - Tech giants are throwing crazy cash at effective communicators. For example, communications director positions are bagging eye-popping numbers: Anthropic pays over $200k, OpenAI is over $400k, and Netflix is as high as $775k! 🤯
- 👀 It's A Thing Now - Chief Communications Officers (CCOs) are multiplying like rabbits, jumping from 90 at big companies in 2019 to almost 200 in 2024. Their median pay is hitting north of $450k, up $50k from 2023. Who knew Comm Arts would be the most important subject for a lucrative high tech future?
- 📣 Cool Story, Bro - Job postings begging for "storytellers" doubled between 2024 and 2025, because everyone's tired of AI slop. Some companies are even hunting for "AI evangelists" to spin tales about (wait for it...) how awesome AI is. Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes, huh?
- 💻 Just Kidding - While computer science grads face a 6.1% unemployment rate, communications majors are chilling at just 4.5%, proving that knowing how to chat beats coding when AI is hogging all the beginner tech jobs. So much for that whole "code or die" thing, apparently.
- 🤔 It's A Process - AI doesn't go through the creative process or work out issues of meaning like a human does. It has a tendency to pick "Option A" in lists because of, well, a lack of creativity and process! It's flooding the world with sloppy nonsense that wastes time and puts a premium on authentic human-made content.
🔥Bottom line: AI is admittedly great at churning out fake essays or data analysis faster than a caffeinated hamster, but it can't fake real heart or communication savvy. AI might be able to string a lot of words together, but companies still need humans to make those words actually make sense meaningfully. If you're a “word person” but don't think you can make a great living off of it, think again! Loads of six-figure salaries in the biggest tech companies are all the proof you need of that.
