The Iran War and Gas Prices

War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing. 🚫 Well, except maybe for higher prices at the pump. 📈😡

Depending on how long the new Middle East conflict carries on, Americans could be in for a crude awakening at the gas station. Let’s take a gander at the latest developments. 👀

Here’s Five Fast Facts on gas prices and the Iran war:

  1. 🚘 Drive Me Mad - Oil markets reacted fast to military strikes on Iran. Crude climbed by about 6% just last week and experts say drivers could soon feel that at the pump. A drawn out conflict could send prices even higher because Iran’s a global oil production big shot.
  1. ⛽ Slick Moves - Right now, the average price of gas in the U.S. is $2.997 a gallon, up 2% compared with last week. The bigger factor here is oil prices. Analysts say every $10 increase in oil can push gas prices up about 25 cents per gallon.
  1. ⛴️ Dire Straits - A lot depends on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the busiest oil corridors in the world. If shipments there get restricted, oil prices could surge past $100 per barrel. Still, drivers may get a short break, since it takes about six weeks for crude oil to be refined and reach gas stations.
  1. 🛢️ Hot Goss - Gas is still averaging about $3 a gallon, but that number can climb quickly when oil markets get jumpy. Gasoline futures rose 9.1% to $2.496 a gallon Monday, the highest since July 2024. While that’s a wholesale price, it can be an early sign of where pump prices might head.
  1. 🪙 Penny For Your Thoughts - Cutting back on gas isn’t as easy as skipping coffee or takeout. For many households (especially those with tighter budgets) fuel is a must-have expense. Even tiny increases matter: every one-cent jump in gas prices adds about $1.4 billion in yearly spending nationwide.

🔥Bottom line: Americans are already fighting an economic battle at home. Fingers crossed the Iran conflict is squashed faster than they’re anticipating.
