The Latest Credit Card Scams And How To Avoid Them

Credit cards are supposed to make life easier. You buy tacos, movie tickets, or a giant inflatable flamingo for the pool - all the necessities, of course - and boom, you're done! Unfortunately, scammers also love credit cards. Those crooks are out here working harder than caffeinated squirrels to sucker you out of your hard earned cash! The good news is that most scams have giant flashing warning signs if you know what to look for.

Here are Five Fast Facts on the latest credit card scams:

  1. 💰 Overcharging Overload - Overcharge scammers love to send you "urgent" messages claiming you were charged too much for something like Netflix or Spotify, hoping you’ll click a link and hand over your login info faster than you can finish a bag of chips.
  1. 📉 Rate Drop Racket - If someone calls you promising to lower your credit card interest rate but asks for money up front, they are both lying to you and breaking the law.
  1. 👀 Subtle Skimmers - Watch out for "skimmers," which are tiny, illegal card readers that bad guys tape onto real gas pumps or ATMs to steal your card data while you’re just trying to fill up or get snacks.
  1. 🆘 Charity Cheat - Donation scams weaponize your kindness. Scammers pretend to collect money for charities, disaster relief, or good causes, often using tear-jerking stories and urgent requests for help NOW. Hint: if someone contacts you and then aggressively demands your money, your scam alarm should start blasting like a smoke detector with a vendetta.
  1. 🐟 Phishing Fraud - Phishing is using fake emails or websites pretending to be real banks or businesses to steal your info. Check for weird email or website addresses before you respond, and never click anything that is sent to you unless you were expecting it and have 100% confidence that it's authentic.

🔥Bottom line: Anyone who contacts you unexpectedly, or anyone who demands you pay up immediately should be treated as suspicious. If you aren't sure, go to the website or call the company directly yourself (not responding to what was sent to you, so you know you're at the real company). And NEVER give out personal info or security questions to anyone who contacts you (only do that if you call them yourself). Protecting your credit card is a lot like playing a game of "Spot the Difference" and you need to play at god mode level to prevent someone else from racking up charges on your account!
