The Lowdown on PA's Broadband Expansion Plans

Does the internet suck in here, or is it just us?! 📱💩 In the not-so-distant past, PA mapped out their high-speed internet access and let's just say it could be…way better. 🥴

If your signal is less-than-optimal, you're in luck. Like many other states across the nation, Pennsylvania's getting billions to get more citizens access to broadband internet. ⚡

Here’s Five Fast Facts on PA's plans to expand broadband:

  1. 🏗️ Billions for Broadband - PA received funding from the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program (BEAD, for short). The BEAD program is pumping $42.45 billion across the nation to expand high-speed internet access.
  1. 🥧 Piece of the Pie - PA received a $1.16 billion cut from BEAD to improve the state's broadband infrastructure. Officials plan on using these funds over the next five years.
  1. 👍 You're Approved - The funding has to go through an approval process with the federal government before funds can flow through to communities. Approval is expected sometime later this year or in early 2024.
  1. 🗣️ Put Your Two Cents In - If you want to have a say in the state's broadband plans, there are a series of community events scheduled to discuss the expansion. There's also an online survey.

  2. 🤬 Spotty Connection - An estimated 325,000 businesses, homes, and other establishments currently lack broadband access in Pennsylvania. If you can't afford broadband, check to see if you're eligible for the Affordable Connectivity Program.

🔥Bottom line: Internet access is a major necessity. How else would you be able to browse memes all day?! We kid (kind of). Hopefully, this new federal funding is just what Pennsylvania needs to get everyone connected.
