The Other Side Of The Tracks

There's a bit of controversy brewing in Southeastern Nebraska over a historical railroad museum! What's going on down there?

Here are Five Fast Facts about the spat over a limo from bygone days:

  1. What's The Proposal? There's an effort to move a 1949 railcar (basically a limo during that time) from Hooper to a new location at the Burlington Railroad Depot in Nebraska City, and refurbish it as a rolling history museum. The BNSF railroad donated some land and 2k feet of track to help get the museum set up and rolling down and back.
  2. Who Supports It? The non-profit Nebraska Railroad Museum claims it owns the railcar and is backing the initiative. Seems like they're on track with their mission!
  3. Who Opposes It? The Nebraska City Administrator claims the city owns several of the crossings that the refurbished railcar would have to cross, and that means the rolling museum could potentially be cited for crossing city land without permission. Apparently he's cross about the crossings.
  4. The Time Crunch - Time is short because of a recent city ordinance prohibiting wheeled vehicles from parking in one place longer than 30 days. They're really railroading the situation to get it moving!
  5. What Happens Next? There's a court hearing next month to determine the ownership of the land and crossings involved, and that will largely dictate what happens with the potential railcar museum. Maybe that'll let the caboose loose!

🔥Bottom line: We understand the concerns about making it all legal, and we obviously support that. However, it seems like saving a piece of American heritage while creating a museum that will generate revenue (and Paychecks!) would be a good thing! Time will tell how this plays out, but we hope things get on the right track quickly.
