The Scoop on Ohio’s 2025 Sales Tax Holiday

If we took a holiday, just some time to celebrate, just one day…without sales tax, it would be SO NICE! 😎🛍️

On scale from one to Madonna, Ohio’s annual Sales Tax Holiday makes us one Material Girl. And in this material world, getting a break on sales tax is a real Ray of Light. 🌞

Here’s Five Fast Facts on this year’s tax holiday:

  1. 🛒 Discount On Me - Each year, Ohioans get to take advantage of tax-free shopping during the state’s Sales Tax Holiday. This year, the holiday will run from August 1st through the 14th. The perk applies to shoppers who make purchases both in-store and online.
  1. 💳 Fortnight of Freedom - Last year, the holiday was extended from three days to 10. For 2025, it’s been extended to two whole weeks. The holiday used to be geared towards school supplies, but now it includes a ton of items. Electronics, home goods, and food and beverage items are all on the list.
  1. 🚭 No Smoking - What’s not included? If you’re buying a car or boat, no soup for you. The sales tax holiday also doesn’t apply to alcohol, tobacco (including vapes), or marijuana products.
  2. 🗣️ Critic’s Corner - While the annual holiday provides savings for consumers across the state, critics say it might not be as helpful as it seems. Some believe that the shoppers who buy during the holiday would have purchased those items anyway and the state’s just losing revenue. Critics also say the holiday puts a financial burden on shoppers throughout the rest of the year.
  3. 🥽 A Detailed Dive - Wanna dive into the fine print? Wondering how it works from the retailer side of things or whether or not an item is eligible? Head to the Ohio Department of Taxation’s official tax holiday page.
