California, here we come! Wait, why is everyone leaving? 🤔 Never mind, we just tried to buy a smoothie and…the price looked like someone’s phone number. 🥤🤪
Speaking of smooth moves, more and more folks are leaving the Sunshine State for greener pastures (or the desert, actually). 🏜️ A recent survey took a deeper dive into who’s trading Cali for Nevada and we’ve got the tea.
Here’s Five Fast Facts on who’s moving from CA to NV:
- 🗣️ Getting Political - More Californians are moving to Nevada, and it could have political ripple effects. About 39% of those leaving California identify as Republican, higher than the state average of 25%, while incoming residents tend to lean Democratic. That mix could reshape the political balance in NV and other battleground states.
- 🚛 Reverse Gold Rush - Even though states like Texas and Florida get more total movers, Nevada stands out for its size. It’s gaining about 13 Californians for every 1,000 residents, which is a big impact.
- 🏃 Fleeing the Scene - Several nearby states, including Arizona, Washington, Oregon and Idaho, are also seeing more Cali transplants. Nevada is especially popular because of lower costs and no state income tax. Many people also prefer to stay within driving distance of family, jobs and friends.
- 🏘️ House Rules - Expensive housing is the biggest reason people are packing up. Since 2015, about 900,000 CA residents have moved out for that reason alone. Lower-income residents are most affected, but higher-income and remote workers also started leaving during the pandemic.
- 🤝 Matchy Matchy - People leaving CA tend to choose states that match their political views, which can strengthen existing divides. In a swing state like Nevada, that could shape future elections over time. Even though fewer people are moving than during the pandemic, they’re still heading to nearby states with lower costs.
🔥Bottom line: When the cost of living gets too high, sometimes moving’s the only way to find relief. How will all the CA transplants change life in Nevada? We’ll keep the pulse on this one.
