America's love affair with plastic is stronger than ever! One might argue that if swiping credit cards was an Olympic sport, America would be on the podium holding a gold medal (purchased on an aggressive monthly installment plan, of course). This is not a great thing, sadly, but it's a reality we cannot ignore.
Here are Five Fast Facts on credit card debt trends in America:
- 🤯 Massive Number - Americans now owe a staggering $1.252 trillion in credit card debt. That's down a bit from the record $1.277 trillion at the end of 2025, but it's still enough plastic-powered spending to make every piggy bank in America very, very unhappy.
- 📈 Going Up - Credit card debt has ballooned recently. Since the pandemic low of $770 billion in early 2021, balances have climbed by $482 billion - a 63% jump in just five years! Apparently, inflation wasn't the only thing going up. Probably no relation there, right?
- 👀 State To State - Connecticut leads the pack in average credit card debt, with cardholders at almost $9,778 on average! New Jersey ($9,748) and Maryland ($9,630) aren't far behind, suggesting that there may be something in the Northeast's water supply that makes the Joneses even harder to keep up with.
- 💸 Paying Off (Or Not) - The good news is that about 55% of adult credit cardholders paid off their balance every month during the past year. The bad news is that the other 45% are giving that balance an extended stay.
- 💲 At Any Rate - The average credit card interest rate is about 21%, and new card offers average almost a whopping 24%! That's a steep price tag to pay for the privilege of paying!
🔥Bottom line: To be fair, the plastic love affair may not be entirely voluntary - we all know how expensive it is to exist in America these days! Either way, the debt is real and we would be wise to do whatever we can to reduce it. News flash: you will never earn enough points or cash back to make it worthwhile. Just sayin'...
