Data centers are making the average Joe’s electric bill go nuclear. However, big tech is making big investments in new power sources. Now, they’re looking to power up an oldie-but-goodie Pennsylvania power plant.
Here’s Five Fast Facts on Three Mile Island:
- 💡 Rise and Shine - Thanks to a $1B loan from the U.S. Department of Energy, the old Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear plant is turning the lights back on. Energy provider Constellation Energy committed to spending $1.6B to restart TMI under a 20-year agreement with Microsoft. Microsoft will use the facility to supply its data centers.
- ⚡ I Got the Power - The new loan will help lower financing costs for Constellation Energy and help get TMI up and running quicker. According to the Department of Energy, TMI can supply 800,000 homes’ worth of power.
- 💫 Charging On - The loan is also part of a bigger energy infrastructure program Congress signed into action back in 2022. Policymakers are hoping the restart will help meet the rising power demand brought on by data centers. They also hope it’ll help fight off the negative effects of climate change.
- 🛀 So Fresh & So Clean - Constellation Energy has a goal to get things completely reopened sometime in 2027. They also gave TMI a shiny new name: the Crane Clean Energy Center. No relation to Frasier and Niles.
- 🏭 I’ll Melt With You - TMI is home to one of the country’s worst-ever commercial nuclear power accidents. In 1979, one reactor was completely destroyed by a meltdown. The plant shut down for good in 2019, due to a lack of government subsidies.
🔥Bottom line: You know what? Let Bill Gates have an old nuke plant. Why not? At least they’re not putting chips in our heads (yet). Paula Cole asked where all the cowboys went.
