Tiny Homes Project in Oshkosh Gets the Green Light

A new project in Oshkosh will build tiny homes for homeless people and families. Not dollhouses or Minecraft buildings, either. Actual small houses. If you’re a tiny bit confused, that’s okay. We’ve got you covered.

Here’s Five Fast Facts about the Tiny Village in Oshkosh:

  1. 🏘️ What the What Now? - Headed up by the Oshkosh Kids foundation, the project involves building 31 homes for the homeless as a place to stay, giving them shelter and resources until they can develop necessary skills to find stable housing. That’s a big (not tiny) deal!
  2. 🏡 Let’s Get Small - Each home in the $4.5M project is about 487 square feet and would be a part of a 3.57-acre village. It includes a manager’s house, community center, a gazebo and gardens. There has been no word yet if the gazebo will also be tiny.
  3. 🏠 Big Staff - The site will have a full-time case manager on site, working with families, as well as a property manager, staff and an on-site police office.
  4. 👋 Bigger Donors - It’s being funded by non-profits like the Oshkosh Kids Foundation, ADVOCAP and Wisconsin Partnership for Housing Development. Those organizations are not tiny. The developer is Wesenberg Architects. Also not tiny.
  5. 🙅‍♀️ Small Concern - The project is already suffering from NIMBY, with nearby businesses raising questions about police patrols. No word on the size of the police cars.

🔥Bottom line: This is a unique (to say the least) substitute for homeless shelters. If the concept pays off, it could easily be used as a model for future villages all across the country. There will always be pushback from the locals (again, NIMBY) but even the tiniest amount of progress has got to start somewhere.
