Tools Or Teammates?

Personification is a big word that basically means treating non-human things like a human. That's exactly what we see when it comes to AI. As great as AI might be at pretending to be a person, it's actually not one. But that hasn't stopped a number of alarming trends in recent studies of people who work with AI regularly. And when it comes to a healthy workplace, that's a huge problem.

Here are Five Fast Facts on treating AI like a co-worker:

  1. 👀 Anyone Out There? - Over half of workers studied admitted they were lonely at work, which explains why they are desperately seeking social support from a machine that functions entirely on math and electrons.
  1. 🫂 Let's Hang - It turns out that 50% of surveyed workers literally view their AI as a work friend they enjoy hanging out with. This is a bit tragic considering AI is nothing more than a tool. After all, who wants to hang out with a screwdriver?
  1. 🤖 So Polite - A massive 78% of people in a study were found saying polite words like "please" and "thank you" to their AIs, suggesting that we are absolutely terrified the robots will remember our bad manners when they eventually take over the world.
  1. 👂 Listen Up - A shocking 64% of respondents claimed their AI assistants gave them better career advice than their actual human managers. To be fair, this probably says more about managers than AI.
  1. 🤔 Guidance Counselor - Humans are also outsourcing their personal development to machines, with 54% of workers turning to their AI companion for advice on life skills like reducing stress, being patient, and becoming a better listener. Why would we ask for life advice from something that's never actually lived...?

🔥Bottom line: The line between technology and human connection is getting weirder by the minute as people continue to personify their tools. While it might feel comforting to vent to a chatbot that never judges you and always responds instantly, experts warn that this digital bromance could totally destroy company culture and make people forget how to interact with real humans. And don’t forget the fact that AI is factually incorrect (in AI-speak, "hallucinating") up to 50% of the time! To save us from this dystopian sci-fi future, experts suggest companies put up roadblocks that force employees to talk to actual living, breathing coworkers instead of defaulting to their electronic besties. After all, an AI might give great meeting summaries, but it can never truly understand the shared pain of a meeting that definitely could have been an email.
