Tribes Make Big $ In Michigan…But Not From Gambling

Move over slot machines and bingo halls - Michigan’s tribal businesses are showing that making money doesn’t have to be about dice or cards. Thanks to non-gaming ventures like factories, AI, life sciences, and buildings, tribes are flexing some serious economic muscle. Let's see what's up!

Here are Five Fast Facts on tribal non-gaming big bucks:

  1. 💰 Billion Dollar Boom - In 2024, Michigan’s 12 federally recognized tribes pulled in $1.24 billion in non-gaming economic impact. Five years earlier, that number was just $288 million. That’s growth that would make your video game XP jealous.
  1. 🏬 Business Big Reach - Those dollars came from 78 tribal businesses, many invested in AI, advanced manufacturing, life sciences, and more. Dare we say it's a full house?
  1. 💵 Jobs And Paychecks - These tribal businesses employ almost 2,900 people directly, paying an average wage of $59,971. That’s so much better than minimum wage that it's enough to pay bills without living entirely on ramen!
  1. 🏢 Big Deals And Big Buildings - The tribes aren’t just farming; they’re buying buildings (like McKay Tower in Grand Rapids), expanding real estate, and scoring massive defense contracts. One tribal business landed a $225 million defense contract!
  1. 📈 Taxes, Assets, And Legitimacy - Together, these entities have nearly $1.5 billion in assets and $805 million in annual gross revenues. And thus, they paid about $136 million in federal and state taxes in 2024, so the state government is a fan, too.

🔥Bottom line: Michigan tribes are no longer just known for gaming - they're making real economic impact with real businesses. They’ve grown fast, created jobs, invested in cool tech, and shown the state that diversifying beyond gaming isn’t just smart, it’s necessary. If these tribes keep playing like this, “non-gaming tribal economy” might become the biggest plot twist future economists write about.
