Uh-Oh - Amazon’s Putting the Brakes on Michigan Developments

While Amazon remains a giant in just about every way, they are still vulnerable to market conditions. And right now, the condition of their market is "slow." What does that mean for their plans to develop more sites in Michigan?

Here's Five Fast Facts about Amazon's Recent Decision …… :

  1. 🏁 Someone Had a Pandemic Lead Foot - Amazon business went gangbusters during the pandemic when none of us could leave our homes. Duh. As a result, they started building new warehouses and distribution centers. A lot of them.
  1. ⛔ Too Far, Too Far - First, they opened a big ol' distribution center on the west side of the state in 2020, which employs 1,000 people. Then they thought they'd open a few more centers, but that never happened.
  1. 🚶‍♀️ We're Not Buying It - The stuff. We're not buying the stuff from Amazon and other online retailers right now because - let's be honest - we're tired of doing it that way. We need to get outside our houses now, thank you very much. Anyway - the slowdown in online buying led to Amazon's decision to wait on growth here.
  1. 😮 Yes, There's More - More bad news, that is. While not specific to Michigan, job losses have totaled more than 100,000 since earlier this year. Locally we did have layoffs in the trucking industry.
  1. 🏀 Will There Be An Epic Rebound? Amazon may or may not continue to build in Michigan but it won't really have a big impact on us anyway because automotive companies are already eyeing the buildings Amazon doesn't want.

🔥Bottom line: Amazon was on FIRE for a minute. Now they're not - wah, wah, wah - and they're not going to grow as fast here. But that's okay because we're sure there's an opportunity for another company or industry to move in and grow here.
