Unpaid Interns May Become Extinct In Wisconsin

Good news for students in the University of Wisconsin System! The colleges have been awarded a grant that increases internship opportunities!

Here’s Five Fast Facts on UW’s Internship Boost:

  1. 🎓 State of Learning - The $1.1M grant goes toward paid opportunities across the state.
  2. 🤑 Pay to Hire - Businesses in high-demand fields will be incentivized to offer paid internships to UW students. The days of picking up the boss’s dry cleaning for free are over.
  3. 🔋 Going Green - UW Milwaukee got two chunks of cash, one for 42 three-month internships in green energy and clean water industries. The other batch is for 20 students in humanities and social sciences. The internships can be for three, six or nine months and students must take a specific career course.
  4. 🚜 Harvest Time - UW-River Falls will create 20 14-week summer internships or 28-week academic year internships for the agricultural industry. Interns will be required to attend a career development seminar.
  5. 🖥️ Always Online - Finally, UW-Stout will create a cybersecurity internship program for 40 students. They’ll work 15 to 20 hours a week for at least three months.

🔥Bottom line: Unpaid internships are often one of the most painful parts of a college education (other than a trip to the student medical center for a very specific reason). It’s good to see UW is investing in students by giving them the opportunity to learn while they earn.
