Walmart And Dynamic Pricing

Your grocery cart may soon do more shifting than your older brother learning to drive a stick. Walmart is rolling out digital price tags across its US stores, promising faster price changes and better efficiency. Of course, anytime a big store promises...ahem...more efficient price changes, shoppers might justifiably wonder whether that's a good thing or not. Let's see what's up!

‍

Here are Five Fast Facts on Walmart's dynamic pricing:

  1. 🏷️ Dynamic Shelf Labels - Digital shelf labels are exactly what they sound like. They let the store change prices electronically instead of sending employees around the store with label makers in hand. The tech can turn price updates that once took hours into something that takes minutes.
  1. 🏃 It's Amazing - Walmart says the labels will help employees work more efficiently. They can update prices quickly, improve accuracy, and spend more time actually helping customers. In other words, fewer employees chasing price tags around the store like they’re playing a very boring version of The Amazing Race.
  1. 😇 What Could Go Wrong? - This tech has raised concerns that DSLs could enable surge pricing or personalized pricing. Walmart's CEO pooh-poohed those fears, saying they don't set prices based on who you are or the time of day, and they won’t use AI or customer information to do it. Well, if he said that today then I guess that's a permanent answer, right?
  1. ⏳ What's The Timeline? - DSLs are already being installed, with Walmart planning to have them in every US store by the end of 2026. Whew, just in time for the holidays!
  1. 📝 Legally Speaking - Some lawmakers have already introduced bills that would ban digital shelf labels in large grocery stores along with surveillance-based pricing. Other politicians will undoubtedly jump in once they see where the political winds are blowing. 😉

🔥Bottom line: Whether Walmart uses this tech purely to cut back on paper tags and improve customer service - which they pinky swear is the case - or they eventually charge you extra for milk during rush hour, the high-tech overhaul is already on the way.

‍

Side note: Walmart is not the only retailer to do this. And keep in mind there are whole industries set up with this pricing model, like airlines or ride shares. But it’s still pretty new in retail, so be forewarned.

‍

In any case, the next time you go to the store, you might want to strap on your running shoes and sprint to the checkout lane with your stuff as fast as you can...just in case.
