Free money is a terrible thing to waste! But too many families in the Evergreen State are doing just that as their teens head off to college.
Here are Five Fast Facts about using the FAFSA to get college financial assistance:
- ⏳ FA…What Now? Each year, the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) provides financial aid to low- and middle-income families across the country to pay college costs. It opens October 1. Now’s the time, seniors!
- 💰 How Much Are We Missing? Some estimates say up to $50 million has been left on the table by Washington graduates who didn’t fill out their FAFSA. Now that just stings. 😱
- 📊 How We Compare - Only 41.7% of WA high school seniors complete the FAFSA. This is the third lowest rate in the nation, and far below the average of 57.2%. This really isn’t a spot where we want to underperform…
- 👪 What’s The Minimum? This funding can cover full tuition for families with household income up to $107k for a family of four. That’s a whole lotta people who don’t think they’ll get anything!
- 💸 The Rest Of The Story - Even if you don’t qualify for federal aid, there’s still tons of state aid available. So, the WA legislature has taken even more steps to get students more money for college: financial aid events, incentive programs, and marketing campaigns to get the word out. (We’re helping, too!)
🔥Bottom line: The median income for someone with a high school diploma is $39k, but for someone with a Bachelor’s degree it jumps up to $65k! If the cost of a degree is a big hurdle, don’t miss out on the FAFSA! There’s lots of aid money available, so go get some of it and end up with better Paychecks for the rest of your life while making your dreams come true!
