Washington Housing Costs

So apparently, buying or renting a place to live in Washington is starting to feel like ordering extra guac at Chipotle — way more expensive than expected, and you’re not sure why you agreed to it. A new report from WalletHub basically said, “Y’all in Washington are coughing up a big chunk of your paycheck just to keep a roof over your heads!”

Here are Five Fast Facts about housing costs in Washington State:

  1. 🔍 The Fine Print - Using data from the Census Bureau and the Council for Community and Economic Research, the report combined home energy costs and mortgage (or rent), and compared it to the median household income. Now you know how the sausage was made!
  1. 🏠 Homeowner Hazard - Washingtonians with mortgages are spending almost 35% of their income on housing — because apparently, mortgages come with a side of emotional damage.
  1. 💰 Renter Rankles - Renters in Washington aren’t living large either — the state ranked 18th in terms of how much rent chews up their paychecks. That’s like getting hit with a rent bill and then being offered a participation trophy.
  1. 🌴 Comparison Shopping - Hawai’i wins gold in the “Most Likely to Make You Broke” category, with over 53% of income going toward housing. They say it's paradise… until you try to buy a condo.
  1. 🚜 Heartland Havens - Iowa and Kansas are like, “Hey, we’ve got cornfields and extra cash!” They spend less than 20% on housing. That’s more money left for…tractors?

🔥Bottom line: If you live in Washington and feel like your wallet cries every time rent or mortgage is due — you’re not imagining things. You’re in one of the most expensive states for housing. But hey, at least you're not in New York where people pay 50% of their income to live next to a rat with a pizza slice.
