Washington State's New Tax Lands Hard

Washington state lawmakers just gifted the state with a scary gift for the holidays, and it's kicking in this month. They rushed to pass the biggest tax increase in state history blindingly fast, apparently because they needed more money to cover their "runaway budget." Instead of taking a careful, grown-up approach to money, they treated tax law like a last-minute school project, and now businesses and taxpayers across the state are freaking out. It’s the definition of "act now, regret later."

Here are Five Fast Facts on Tax Increases in Washington State:

  1. 💨 Speed Over Care - The entire sweeping tax package was approved by lawmakers in a ridiculously fast nine days. That's barely enough time to decide what to wear to school, let alone pass a massive law that raises taxes on millions of people!
  1. 😡 People Already Upset - Constituents and businesses -- over 90,000 of them -- alike are furious, saying the tax hits regular folks harder than corporations, especially on essentials like housing, gas, or services.
  1. 💰 The Take - The new tax is expected to rake in a gigantic $2.7 billion over the next four years, which is a lot of money to be rushing through the system. Your money, that is. Or at least it was your money...
  1. 🧑‍⚖️ Legal Action Pending - Some parts of the law are already being challenged in court - Comcast, for example, is claiming that a tax on ads is illegal. If they win, it rips half a billion out of those expected revenues.
  1. 🤔 Was It Even Necessary? - Somewhat lost in the mix of the budget crisis is the fact that tax revenues have gone up in recent years. Just not as much as the spending binges Olympia has taken. A little self-discipline goes a long way, but state lawmakers haven't had any for a very long time.

🔥Bottom line: In the end, this mess lies squarely on the state's lawmakers for causing chaos with a calculator. They panicked over their budget, slapped a huge tax on everyone, and now they're stuck dealing with angry businesses, lawsuits, and even bigger financial problems coming down the road (you can only kick the can so long). It seems Washington’s government decided that when it comes to taxes, "fast and furious" just means "confusing and expensive."
