Welcome Home, Here’s Some Cash!

Some positive news for a change: Gov. Evers just announced that emergency and extremely low-income housing will get $2M in Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) grants.

Here’s Five Fast Facts About New WHEDA Grants:

  1. 🏘️ Home Boy - The grants will support 1,700 beds and housing units across 54 providers across 29 counties. Not bad.
  2. 🏠 Home Girl - $1M comes straight from WHEDA while the other $1M comes from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). None of it came from the massive surplus. I’m not even going to link to our articles about it anymore.
  3. 🛏️ Home Slice - WHEDA said the grants will create or improve 1,764 beds and housing units. Evers also said the grants will help create local construction jobs, but come on. That’s kind of pushing it.
  4. 🏡 Home Work - Organizations receiving the grants include non-profit agencies, local governments and tribal authorities that serve the low-income or disadvantaged.
  5. 🛋️ Home Run - WHEDA said it got 94 applications asking for more than $3.6M. Why couldn’t they fill the remaining $1.6M with money from the sur…never mind.

🔥Bottom line: Grant money that helps low-income and disadvantaged people is a fantastic thing. Especially in light of a lot of the harsh conditions facing them in every possible direction. It’s clear we can do more, but again, partisan fighting is preventing any of that money in the surplus from helping anyone in the state at all. Figure it out, people. We need that money.
