Well, Well, Well, Look at What Evers Did Now…

Private well owners who are dealing with groundwater contamination are about to get some help. Gov. Evers just announced a new $10M grant to get rid of those worries.

Here’s Five Fast Facts About Well Cleanup Cash:

  1. 🌊Clear Solution - The program covers the treatment, replacement or abandonment of polluted private wells. Funding comes from the American Rescue Plan Act.  It could help address the contamination of more than 1,000 additional wells that existing programs did not cover.
  2. 🪣Fewer Hoops - The program eliminates several requirements, limits, and eligibility qualifications that previously made things very difficult for well owners to get funding.
  3. 🚱I’m Drinking WHAT? - Wells in the state have been found to contain harmful chemicals that include nitrates (40% of the state), arsenic (every county), and thousands of chemicals that don’t break down easily in the environment called PFAS.
  4. ☠️What the PFu** - PFAS in particular have been a major source of concern. Levels in the water supply for the towns of Peshtigo and Campbell have been so high that residents are relying on bottled water. Their private wells were polluted from chemicals used in firefighting foam.
  5. 🚰Straight From the Tap - Information on how you can apply for funding through the program will be available this fall through the Wisconsin DNR.

🔥Bottom line: The situation in Peshtigo and Campbell may be the worst case scenario, but the state’s well water clearly (see what I did there?) needs to be cleaned up and fast. The best part is that it’s not costing you an extra cent in any way!
