What's In Ohio's $88B General Fund Budget?

Christmas came early this year! 🧑‍🎄 Just kidding, it's Ohio's latest billion dollar budget. 🤑

Recently, the Ohio House passed an $88 billion general fund budget through House Bill 33. Wanna know what's inside? Keep reading. 👀

Here’s Five Fast Facts on what's included in the budget:

  1. 🧑‍🏫 Raise the Roof - Under the budget's fair school funding plan, starting salaries for teachers will be increased to $40K per year for the next two years.
  1. 📚 I'll Vouch for That - There's also an increase in the school voucher program for K-12 public education, which now totals $1.3 billion. However, this doesn't include universal school vouchers, which were nixed for the second year in a row.
  1. ✂️ Cut. It. Out. - The bill takes away a controversial flat tax plan and includes a tax cut instead. The cut will impact those earning $90,000 or less the most.
  1. 🍼 Tax Free Tot Supplies - Parents rejoice! The new budget legislation exempts baby products from sales and use tax. It also includes another $60 million in child care funding.
  1. 💁🏻‍♀️ Any Extras? - Other goodies in the bill include a $1,000 tax credit for volunteer first responders, a low-income housing tax credit program, and an increase in Medicaid coverage for dental and in-home health care workers.

🔥Bottom line: One noteworthy notable that people aren't too happy about is the removal of proposed funding for addiction and mental health services. 😑 Ohio isn't the only state with folks concerned about addiction services (especially their neighbors in PA). We know these budgets don't make everyone happy, but let's hope what's included will make a difference for hard working citizens in the Buckeye State. The entire budget bill is over 5,000 pages of governmental goodness and you can take a peak for yourself here
