🏈 Is it Michigan vs. Michigan State?
🌭 Lafayette vs. American Coney Island?
🏎️ Ford vs. Chevy?
Nope, guess again.
Here’s Five Fast Facts …… :
- 👎 We Suck at Deciding Stuff - Those of us lucky enough to call the Great Lakes State home know there has always been a debate on what we call ourselves. Michiganders? Or Michiganians?
- 😠 The Government Says They Get to Decide - So they did. In November of 2017, the state legislature decided the official term for a resident of Michigan would be Michigander.
- 🎉 Lucky for Them - Well, they win again. A bunch of people took a survey in 2020, and it turns out almost 92% of them agreed it’s Michigander. Ope!
- ❓❗ Good for the Goose - But what does it mean? Most history peeps say the term “Michigander” was created by combining the word “Michigan” and “gander” (which means a male goose). Umm. That actually leaves us with more questions than answers…
- 🔥 Sick Burn, Bro - The name did cause quite a rift once when US Representative Abraham Lincoln called a presidential candidate “the Great Michigander”. Because back then, calling someone a goose was an insult; basically, it meant “ninny.”
🔥Bottom line: Michiganders unite, and let’s forever let "Michiganians" live somewhere in our history. Our deep history The debate, in our humble opinion, has been settled.
