Your laundry room is about to become the newest political battleground! The Trump administration wants to roll back federal appliance efficiency mandates, arguing Americans should decide for themselves whether they want a high-tech wizardly washing machine or one that simply washes socks without needing a software update. Here are Five Fast Facts about possible appliance energy efficiency changes:

1. 👍 Yeah, Baby - The Department of Energy announced a proposal to permanently end many federal appliance efficiency mandates, saying the changes would preserve consumer choice, lower costs, and allow Americans to buy appliances that "actually work." Wow, yeah, wouldn't that be nice?

2. 🚫 Just Say No - Opponents argue efficiency standards help lower electricity and water bills, and that any higher purchase price comes back over time through lower utility bills (and they save the planet).

3. 📈 Cost Of Efficiency - Since Energy Star began, washing machine prices have increased by over 50%. Coincidence? You decide.

4. 🤦 Old But Reliable - To complete the double whammy, reliability over time has dropped, with the average life span of a washing machine going from 19.2 years to about 10.6 years.
