Remember when having one job was enough to pay the bills? Good times, good times. Now, more Americans than ever before are clocking in at a second job, apparently because the stack of bills to be paid looked at your paycheck and said, "that's adorable." Welcome to polyworking: desperately trying to survive in an economy that keeps moving the financial goalposts.
Here are Five Fast Facts on polyworking:
- 2️⃣➕ What Is It? - In short, it's having two or more jobs at the same time. That could be a full-time job plus freelance work or a part-time gig, a side business, or even two full-time roles. Basically, your resume has started reproducing.
- 📅 How Common? - About 9 million Americans, or 5.5% of all employed workers, hold more than one job. That's a lot of people whose calendars need their own calendars.
- 💸 Major Motivation - Money is a big reason. Seventeen percent of adults say they took another job specifically because of higher prices. Other reasons include paying down debt, building emergency savings, exploring new careers, or protecting themselves from layoffs. Apparently, financial security now comes with a punch card.
- The Good, The Bad, And The Exhausted - Extra work can mean more income, new skills, better professional connections, and less dependence on one employer. But...juggling jobs can also mean burnout, less personal time, and mental exhaustion from constantly switching gears. Free time may become a distant memory.
- 📝 Be Careful - Federal law doesn't require you to tell your bosses about each other or cap total hours worked. But, employment agreements, conflict-of-interest policies, licensing rules, or state law can restrict a second job. Breaking a written outside-work policy can lead to discipline or termination. Extra paychecks ain't risk free, baby.
🔥Bottom line: Polyworking can be a smart way to boost income or build a better long term career, but there are real risks to your health and work life. Know what you’re getting into if you take that path! Ultimately, it's proof of both human resilience and our collective inability to comfortably afford life on a single salary.
