Buying a car is fun...right up until the point where thousands of dollars leave your bank account because a salesperson assures you that the steering wheel is somehow a luxury item. If you want to walk away with a great deal instead of a mountain of regret, you need to master the art of tactical calendar manipulation (that is, aligning your purchase with the desperation level of the dealership). It's all about maximizing your negotiating power.
Here are Five Fast Facts on when to buy a car:
- 🥱 Midweek Match - Wednesday is your friend. Weekends bring the crowds, so go Wednesday afternoon (especially late in the day) when salespeople will be more focused on you...and more motivated to get a deal done on a slow day.
- 🤭 Under The Wire - The last couple days of the month are prime time. Dealers and salespeople have monthly sales goals, and missing a target can mean missing big bonuses. Suddenly, that “rock-bottom price” has a basement!
- 💪 Hit The Quarter Back - The end of a quarter is month end on steroids because the final days of March, June, September, and December bring even bigger sales goals. The ultimate timing trifecta is late on a Wednesday afternoon that is also the last day of the month and quarter. At that point, you’re not shopping, you’re conducting a hostage negotiation with the calendar.
- 🎁 ‘Tis The Season - December is the month to remember! Dealers are chasing year-end targets, and automakers offer their most aggressive promotions to close deals. Look for clearance sales, low-APR financing, and cash discounts. Nothing says “Happy Holidays” like avoiding depreciation.
- 🔍 Golden Nuggets - Shop when inventory is high because more supply means more leverage for buyers. Watch for model-year transitions, too, which are typically July through October. Dealers often discount the outgoing model year to get them off the lot.
🔥Bottom line: Don’t just pick your car...pick your moment. These days, your wallet will still complain, but maybe you’ll walk away feeling like a negotiation ninja instead of the person who financed a cupholder for the price of a small island.
