Who’s Teaching This Class, Anyway?

Yet ANOTHER respiratory illness is spreading across the country, and this time it’s hitting teachers across Minnesota hard.

Here’s Five Fast Facts About the Latest Teacher Shortage:

  1. 🦠 OMG RSV WTF - This time, the cause is an outbreak of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It typically hits babies and elderly the hardest. Couple that with higher-than-normal flu cases, and you’ve got the perfect storm of sickness.
  2. 📈 Multiplication - According to the Minnesota Department of Health, flu-like illnesses more than doubled during the second week of November and it’s only going up from there.
  3. 🗺️ Geography - Due to exposure, it’s hitting teachers across the state so hard that there are major staff shortages across every district.
  4. 🏫 Chaos Theory - It’s getting so bad that the principal at an elementary school in Roseville had to teach two kindergarten classes. Another district moved all classes to virtual learning after more than 20% of students and staff were out sick.
  5. ⛔ NOPE - Substitute teachers are staying far, far away. In fact, some districts are increasing substitute teacher pay to attract applicants, but there still is a shortage of applicants. I mean, can you blame them?

🔥Bottom line: If you’re a substitute teacher and are willing to run the risk of infection and the threat of hostile parents, you can have your pick of school districts right now. All kidding aside, schools are out of options and there’s no clear solution in sight, unless you’re ready to stay home with your kids.

How would you solve the shortage?
