With gas prices skyrocketing, we’ve got a new plan: cram ourselves into a delivery robot to get from A to B. 🤠🤖 And while we’re in there, we’ll snack on someone else’s DoorDash! 😋
Unless you live under a rock, you’ve probably seen gas prices hike up at your local station. 📈 A lot of that has to do with current geopolitical happenings, but Arizona is also no stranger to higher gas prices in the warmer months. 🥵 Curious about why? We’re unpacking it all here!
Here’s Five Fast Facts on Arizona’s summertime gas spikes:
- ⛴️ Strait Frustration - Tensions in the Middle East are starting to show up at the gas pump. After Iran restricted access through the Strait of Hormuz following a Feb. 28 attack, prices have stayed up. As of March 31, Arizona’s average gas price was $4.68, still below a historical peak of $5.39 back in June 2022.
- 🍺 I’ll Have the Summer Blend - Part of Arizona’s seasonal price increase comes down to how gas is made. Refineries switch to a summer blend by early May, which takes more effort to produce and can temporarily slow supply. Less supply often means higher prices at the pump.
- 😵 Double Whammy - Summer gas comes with a double hit. It’s more expensive to refine (about 2 to 4 cents more per gallon) and it can be less efficient, meaning you might use more of it. That can push demand higher and keep prices elevated.
- ⛽ Road Trip Ready - Summer travel is also a major driver of higher gas prices nationwide. Demand for gasoline typically peaks during the summer driving season, when more people hit the road for trips and vacations. As demand rises, prices tend to follow.
- 👋 Waive-ing Goodbye - With gas prices rising, officials are scrambling for cost-cutting solutions. The seasonal fuel requirements could add to the pressure and put a bigger burden on Arizonan paychecks. Some leaders are now pushing for waivers to help keep prices in check.
🔥Bottom line: If AZ lawmakers can put a pause on seasonal fuel rules, we could see a little less pain at the pump this summer. Let’s cross our fingers, keep the pulse, and hope for the best!
