Wildfires In Nebraska!

In Nebraska, things are heating up - and not in a “fun summer at the lake” kind of way. The 2026 wildfire season has been brutal, turning the state’s famous grasslands into a crispy disaster. Nebraska is usually the king of beef, but this year the whole system is…well, on fire.

Here are Five Fast Facts about the crispy situation in Nebraska:

  1. ✌️ Double Duty Dilemma - Most of the state's fire departments are run by volunteers, which means the same person helping with a baby cow birth is often the same person jumping into a fire truck to keep their neighbor's fence from turning into a row of sparklers.
  1. 🤯 Bad Records - By the end of March, wildfires had scorched 945,381 acres in Nebraska, which officially shattered the state’s all-time annual record in just three short months.
  1. 🤦 Um, Guess Not - For the last 150 years or so, people have largely stopped doing controlled burns, which allowed thick grass and trees to build up like a giant pile of tinder. Added to a drought and reduced herd sizes from several tough years, oops doesn't adequately cover it.
  1. 🍔 Big Mac Attack - This is a massive problem for your dinner plate because Nebraska is the #1 beef exporter in the US, shipping out $1.66 billion worth of beef and veal in 2024.
  1. 🔥 Wallet Burn - Many ranchers had to sell animals early at a loss or buy super expensive feed, which is driving up beef prices across feedlots, packing plants, grocery stores, and export markets. The whole supply chain is being torched.

🔥Bottom line: The fires are largely contained now, but Nebraska’s cattle industry is stuck between a burning rock and a red hot hard place. Ranchers are famous for being "tougher than a two-dollar steak," but toughness alone might not be enough to fully recover from this million-acre bonfire. If we want to keep the burgers and steaks coming without breaking the bank, the industry might need to start using more age-old best practices like controlled burns to clear out the wildfire fuel. Otherwise, the entire state’s economy might be overcooked.
