Will Georgia Abolish The Income Tax?

Georgia is currently in the middle of a messy breakup with its state income tax. For years, the state has been nibbling away at it, but lately, lawmakers have decided that the income tax is about as popular as a surprise math test on a Friday afternoon. With a mountain of extra cash sitting in the state's piggy bank, Georgia’s leaders are scrambling to throw money back at taxpayers. Not everyone is happy about it, though, which leads to some spicy fights. Let's get into it!

Here are Five Fast Facts on abolishing Georgia's income tax:

  1. 📉 Anti-Progressive Process - Georgia switched to a flat tax system - where everyone pays the same percent - in 2024. Since then, they've also dropped that rate down a couple times to the current 5.19%. But now there's an effort to cut it even further, to 4.99%. Is Georgia addicted to tax cuts? If it puts money back in our pockets, we're here for it!
  1. 💨 Tax Free Income - Republicans in the state Senate are pushing even further: get rid of income tax altogether (by 2032)! Step one of their plan would erase income tax on the first $50k earned ($100k for families) next year. This would give over $5k back to about 70% of Georgian families each year! State-sponsored raises, anyone?
  1. 🛑 Not So Fast - Democrats are pushing back, saying such a policy would ruin the state's economy, eliminate "nearly every" tax credit in the state, and benefit the rich more than the poor. Income tax currently provides about 44% of all tax revenues in the state. Question: if you don't pay income taxes, do you really need income tax credits? 🤔
  1. 👀 Closing The Gap - To cover that lost income tax, tax breaks would be cut for data centers, insurance companies, banks, and other select corporate industries. Substitution for the win!
  1. 💵🐖 Fat Piggy - Georgia is sitting pretty with a record-breaking $15 billion in spare cash in its piggy bank. That is enough money to buy every single person in Georgia about 1,600 peaches...or, you know, keep the state running while they figure out how to live without income tax.

🔥Bottom line: A cynical person might call this an attempt to buy votes, but with pretty much every taxpayer in Georgia primed to get money back in their pocket, does anyone really care? It's true that not everyone is a fan, but Texas, Florida, and Tennessee already have no income tax and are getting along just fine....so why not Georgia, too? It'll all have to play out before the end of the current session in April.

Regardless, keep an eye on your mailbox - the state is officially trying to buy its way back into your heart, one check at a time. And they just might pull it off, too...
