Winning At Income Tax

Ah, income taxes. It's a staple of our lives, isn't it? The IRS takes a cut of all "income" you earn in a given year, but there are ways to legally reduce the amount of income you have to report, letting you keep more of your hard-earned cash in your own pocket instead of handing it over to Uncle Sam. We just found a great list of 50, but we'll just hit a few highlights to get you started.

Here are Five Fast Facts on avoiding (at least some) income taxes:

  1. 👍 Totally Legal - To be clear, these aren’t loopholes in a sneaky way. They’re official rules baked right into the system. Rich people and companies with armies of accountants and lawyers make use of lots of these, but you can, too.
  1. 😀 Free Stuff - Things like gifts, inheritances, and certain benefits often don’t count as taxable income. Basically, if Grandma gives you money, the IRS usually looks the other way.
  1. 💸 Life Is Expensive - Certain perks, like health-related benefits or reimbursements, can also be tax-free, because apparently even the IRS agrees that medical bills and insurance are already painful enough.
  1. 🏢 Work Perks - Some employer-provided benefits, like education help or awards, may not be taxed. So your boss might actually be giving you something better than pizza parties for once!
  1. 🧑‍🧑‍🧒 Family Issues - Some family income - like paying your kids to work, receiving child support or alimony - are also exempt from income taxes. Is the IRS in support of bringing back child labor?!

🔥Bottom line: The IRS often feels like its mission is to ruin your day, but there are some quiet and legal ways to protect a bit more of your cash.
