Wisconsin Rural Roads Face a Bumpy Future

Wisconsin’s rural roads are in bad, bad shape (not in the “equilateral triangle” way, either) and they’re only getting worse due to a lack of funds necessary to repair them. In fact, our roads are so bad, they’re hurting the economy (no one wants to drive on them!) and costing each driver a total of $6.8B annually. What the heck?

Here’s Five Fast Facts On Wisconsin’s Rural Roads:

  1. 🚨Tire-d - Aside from our insane weather shifts, we have a lot of heavy equipment, especially for farming, rolling around and that causes pavement fatigue. It can have major long-term effects.
  2. 🛣️Rough Road Ahead - Highway commissioners have found that keeping up with the damage is getting more and more difficult as money for the improvements is outpaced by the rapidly-increasing costs of work.
  3. 🛞Spinning Out - Some counties have implemented a vehicle registration tax (AKA wheel tax) and use that money for road repairs and snowplowing.
  4. 🧾Steel Wheels - The state Legislature keeps bringing up a gas tax as a way to raise money for roads and bridges, but they haven’t acted on those plans in any way.
  5. 🚧Solid Shoulder - Help is on the way in the form of Biden’s approved Infrastructure Bill that gives Wisconsin $5.5B to update roads, bridges, lead pipe removal and a few other necessary updates.

🔥Bottom line: Forget holding that cup of hot coffee between your legs while you’re driving on Ashwaubenon back roads, because you’ll wind up burned and wearing it. Federal money is great, but it’s the money at the state and local levels that really matter. If only there was a way you could have an actual impact on the people in office…
