Without Jobs, People Are Leaving Ohio

The kids call Ohio boring, but what do they know? 🤷🏽‍♀️ Bet they’ve never been to the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame! 🤘 Or the house from A Christmas Story! You’ll shoot your eye out. 🔫

Unfortunately, Ohio’s fun sights and sounds aren’t enough to keep folks from moving away. 📦 Some recent surveys and stats say a lack of jobs are making people pack up their U-Hauls for greener pastures. 🚚

Here’s Five Fast Facts on jobs, Ohio, and why folks are leaving:

  1. 👋 Bye Bye Birdie - According to the OH Department of Development, an estimated 675,000 people will leave the Buckeye State by 2050. The main reason? A lack of decent job opportunities.
  1. 🚀 Smell Ya Later - Between 2000 and 2020, Ohio’s labor force declined by roughly 91,000. This stat is a pretty good (or bad) sign that Ohio’s slow population growth has a lot to do with a stinky jobs market.
  1. 🍹 Drunk On the Job - Ohio leaders spent billions on job growth without a real payoff. JobsOhio received a special, below-market deal to run the state’s liquor sales, costing taxpayers more than $1B. The deal was extended by DeWine without extra payment. Much of the cash went to businesses, but there’s little evidence it actually created jobs.
  2. 🤖 Data Disaster - Data centers also got big incentives, despite creating very few jobs. Analysts say this actually cost taxpayers about $1M per job. On top of that, a tax break for LLCs signed in 2013 costs the state $1B a year.
  3. 📉 Down a Peg - Right now, Ohio holds the number 7 spot for most populous states in the country. But by 2030, Georgia and North Carolina are predicted to take its place.

🔥Bottom line: If Ohio wants to keep more peeps, they better find a way to put them to work. As if trying to get a good job is stressful enough, we just entered another new year with a more expensive shopping cart. The talking heads may tell you inflation’s cooler than a cucumber, but the cost of groceries sure isn’t. Check out this article for the latest on food prices.
