Get ready for a world where robots are not just learning to talk and paint, but they're also (gasp!) getting people fired! It seems Artificial Intelligence, or AI, isn't just about making cool new apps anymore; it's also making some human jobs disappear faster than your homework on a Friday. At the same time, it's also creating jobs faster than job descriptions can be posted on LinkedIn! So, if you ever thought robots were just for sci-fi movies, think again – they're now starring in a massive evolution in the workplace (both good and bad), and you will likely get a front row seat one way or another!
Here are Five Fast Facts on how AI is killing human jobs...and creating them:
- 💨 Bye Bye Bank Jobs! - We've talked about this many times, and it's now our reality: AI is going to replace a LOT of jobs! This is particularly true in white collar circles. Depending on where you look, estimates say hundreds of thousands of jobs might be lost in the banking sector alone over the next three to five years, which is likely to be one of the hardest hit sectors. That voice you hear on the other side of the ATM speaker may not be a human much longer!
- 👋 Bye Bye Tech Jobs! - So far in 2025, over 50,000 techies have lost their jobs, far more than last year! Big tech companies are investing big bucks in AI while cutting the very people who built it. Skynet thanks you for your service, now GET OUT.
- 🤗 Hello Everyone Else Jobs! - On the other hand, job postings for non-tech roles with AI skills are skyrocketing, and these postings have 28% higher salaries ($18,000 more)! The Tech sector is being replaced by the AI it created, but everyone else is making more money because of it. Irony? 100%!
- 🤔 Smoke And Mirrors? - Some analysts say AI is more of a scapegoat than an actual cause. Where does this spicy take come from? There are roughly 286,000 layoffs planned for this year, but only 20,000 of them are related to automation. Of those, only 75 were specifically due to AI. Of course, it's also hard to account for the fact that AI isn't used by many companies to improve efficiency, nor is there any way to track employees who use consumer versions of AI to help them with their own jobs. Clear as mud? Correct.
- 🏋️ How To Roll - So how do you as an individual in the work force deal with all of this? The best way is to build your own AI skill sets. The more AI skills you have -- creating AI prompts, troubleshooting results from queries, using AI effectively to make business decisions, etc. -- the more money you will make. Multiple AI skills can net you a 43% higher salary, and job postings from last year show four times the demand for them compared to 2023. So, if you can use it, you can cash it in like a signed bank check!
🔥Bottom line: Ultimately, employers are putting the most value in hybrid skillsets that include communication, leadership, problem-solving, and customer service alongside the ability to leverage AI effectively. Those human qualities will never go out of style, and will remain uniquely human. Focus on that and you should be able to build some job security along the way.
