Zoomers Are Telling Tall Tales About Their Money

Lying about the size of your paycheck is all fun and games until they actually want to see your yacht. 🛳️👀 Wait, did we say we had a yacht? We meant yacht rock. 🕺 Who wants to hear some more Michael McDonald? #yamobethere

When it comes to telling financial fibs, Gen Z is really spinning some good ones. 🗣️ Let’s take a look at the tall tales they’re telling and why this new trend’s trending.

Here’s Five Fast Facts about Gen Z’s financial finessing:

  1. 🤑 Bogus Bragging - Ever round up a little when talking about money? A recent survey found that about 34% of Gen Zers regularly exaggerate their financial situation, and another 17% say they’ve done it a few times.
  1. 😰 Under Pressure - Keeping up with the Zoomer Joneses can come with a real price tag. Around 59% say they’ve overspent to look more financially successful, and 39% say it’s a regular habit. Researchers say it’s a trend driven by social pressure and perception.
  1. 🥀 Lies For Love - When it comes to dating, some people are willing to stretch their budget…or break it. About 37% say they’d overdraft or go into debt to impress someone, and nearly 20% would spend up to $100. Around 17% say they’ve already taken on debt for a partner, much more than for a friend.
  1. 💳 Fantastic Plastic - It’s not always obvious where the money is going, but the numbers tell a story. Gen Z has more credit card debt than millennials did at the same age. Average balances jumped from about $2,248 in 2013 to $2,834 in 2023.
  1. 👯 Shame-Free Friendships - Many Gen Zers don’t see money as a dealbreaker when dating. Only about 18% would end a relationship over financial habits, and nearly half say they’d marry someone with poor credit.
