5 Ohio Laws Dropping in January

We got pulled over the other night. The officer noticed our eyes were bloodshot and asked if we’d been hitting the sauce. 😵 We clapped back with a “we noticed your eyes are glazed over…been hitting the donuts?” And then we were immediately arrested. 🙃🍩

While we were in the pen, we noticed that five new Buckeye State laws are going into effect in January. Take a gander! 👀

Here’s Five Fast Facts on Ohio’s new laws:

  1. 💰 Wage Gauge - As of January 1st, the minimum wage in Ohio will increase to $11/hr ($5.50 for tipped workers). It’s part of the plan passed in 2006 to raise the minimum wage each year (because, inflation). The new wage is a 2.8% increase from last year’s.
  1. 🚑 Helping Hand - On January 19th, Ohio’s Communication Disability Database (Keith’s Law) gets an expansion. The database alerts 911 dispatchers and first responders so they can better serve disabled individuals. Participation in the database is voluntary.
  1. 🤳 Phone It In - Many schools already have rules for cellphone use in classrooms, but as of January 1st, it’ll be a law to have them. In the new year, every Ohio public school will be required to have an official policy. The law is aimed at reducing cyberbullying and exceptions can be made in emergency situations.
  1. 🫘 Countin’ Beans - Planning on becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA)? Make sure to check the new exam and licensure requirements. In January, changes to education and experience requirements go into effect.
  2. 🎒 School Dayz - House Bill 57, effective January 19th, has a couple school-related updates. One requires schools that carry Narcan (or overdose reversal drugs) to have a training plan for administrators. The other change is around how much time students can leave school during the day for religious instruction.

🔥Bottom line: Can you believe the federal minimum wage hasn’t gone up since 2009? On a scale from one to Hillary Duff, raises are so yesterday. While our wages stay stale, our health insurance is going up. If you don’t have coverage, Ohio’s free clinics come in clutch. Head here for the latest stats.

Will any of these laws impact your household?
