When an Abbott formula factory in Michigan closed in February of this year, it set off a nationwide shortage of baby formula. Now the factory has announced its plans to reopen. How quickly will formula be back on the shelves? Let's take a look.
Here's Five Fast Facts …… :
- 🍼 The closure - The Sturgis, Michigan facility closed on February 17th over product safety concerns after 4 infants became ill and 2 died. Abbott is the largest producer of formula in the country.
- ⏲️ Reopening- The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given Abbott the go-ahead to reopen the facility, and that will happen on June 4th.
- ✋ Not so fast, though - Even after the facility restarts, it will take about 6 weeks to get the product back on the shelf. This means we're not out of this crisis yet.
- 🕵️♀️In the meantime - Be on the lookout for formula scammers. Check out some ways to avoid falling victim to these crooks.
- ✈️ And next time? To help get shelves restocked while the Abbott facility reboots, President Biden brought formula in from overseas in "Operation Fly Formula." He also invoked the Defense Production Act. But what's to say this couldn't happen again? What is being done to prevent this in the future? That's the million-dollar question.
🔥Bottom line: With the Abbott facility coming back online and the government's measures to help the crisis, this mess will be behind us in a few weeks. In the meantime, be sure to avoid scammers – and maybe start a stockpile for the next time.
