Digging Into PA’s School Tax Revenue

When you pay your property taxes, a decent chunk of it goes to your neighborhood kiddos. 🎒 No, not to re-up their Roblox bux. 🎮💰 The state relies on the revenue to keep the school machine movin’.

How have property taxes changed over the years and how is it impacting Pennsylvania schools? Let’s take a peek at some of the latest stats. 👀👇

Here’s Five Fast Facts on PA school tax revenue:

  1. 🔔 School Bills - Property taxes remain one of the largest bills many Pennsylvanians pay each year, and that bill keeps growing. According to analysts, schools collected more than $17.86B in property taxes and related revenue during the last fiscal year, representing the largest increase in collections in almost a decade.
  1. 🚀 Fuel for Funding - The growth isn't just a one-year blip. PA schools collected $725M more in property taxes during fiscal 2024-25 than they did the year before. That’s a 4.2% increase and the largest annual jump since 2007-08. Collections are also expected to grow by another $600M in the coming year.
  1. 🏘️ Props To You - Property taxes aren't just one piece of PA's school-funding puzzle, they're one of the biggest. More than 40% of school district revenue comes from local property taxes, which explains why changes in tax collections can have such a large impact on education budgets.
  1. 📍 The Location Debate - More property-tax revenue doesn't automatically mean every school benefits equally. Because local funding is tied to property values, wealthier communities generally raise more money than lower-wealth districts. This gap has been at the center of PA’s school-funding debate for years.
  1. 📉 It’s Shrinkage - The school-funding story is also about shrinking federal aid. PA schools are expected to receive $1.3B of it this year, down 53.7% from the COVID-era peak. Meanwhile, Philadelphia's property reassessment generated an additional $277M in local tax revenue, helping fuel the statewide increase in school funding.
