This Summer, Teen Jobs Are Hard to Find

Alright, Junior. School’s out and before you get too comfy on the couch, you better hit the job boards. Mama needs a new pair of shoes! 🫡👠

Before you poo-poo your teen’s post-school plans to become the next viral TikTok dance sensation, they might be onto something. 🤳Today, there aren’t as many summer jobs in the sea.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on summer jobs for teens:

  1. 💰 You Betta Work - The classic summer job may be becoming an endangered species. Job postings for camp counselors have fallen nearly 30% from last year, and experts say teen employment could be headed for its weakest summer since federal tracking began in 1948.
  1. 🕺 Leisure Suit - One reason teen job prospects appear weaker this summer is a sharp decline in hiring plans from the leisure and hospitality sector. Employers in the industry expect to fill 70% fewer positions than they did last year.
  1. 📉 Summer Slump - If current forecasts hold, teenagers will fill approximately 790,000 jobs during May, June, and July. That would represent a decline from last year's 801,000 jobs and the weakest summer job market for teens in nearly eight decades.
  1. 👙 Locals Only - As gas prices rise, some families are swapping road trips for days at the local pool. The staycation vibes could be creating opportunities for teens in some areas, with lifeguard job ads jumping 78% compared with last summer.
  1. 🐝 Busy Bees - Bagging groceries or flipping burgers after school is becoming less common. While teen employment once topped 50%, today's rate sits around 35%, reflecting both a tougher job market and a generation juggling everything from college applications to content creation.
