These days, every time we hit the gas station, we get a surprise. We just wanted to top off the tank and gave the guy $5. Instead of filling up, he farted and gave us a receipt. 😱💨
The current gas situation is stinking up the whole nation, giving Americans a case of the economic worries. 🫣🆘 How exactly is everyone feeling? Scroll through these recent stats.
Here’s Five Fast Facts on how Americans feel about the current economy:
- 🥴 Feelin’ Queasy - As gas prices rise, Americans are feeling more uneasy about the economy. A recent Economist/YouGov poll shows about 59% say things are getting worse, up from 53% just a week earlier in early March. That’s the most pessimistic reading since October 2022.
- 🦘 Gas Price Parkour - The number of Americans saying the economy is getting worse jumped 6 points in just one week, one of the largest increases since 2017. Most of the bigger spikes came in spring 2020, when the economy stalled at the start of COVID.
- ⛽ Off Sides - Democrats are more likely to say gas prices have jumped a lot, but they’re not the only ones with growing economic worries. Among Republicans, 36% who see big price increases say the economy is getting worse, compared to 15% who see smaller increases.
- 📈 Shifting Gears - Democrats’ overall views stayed steady, with 86% saying the economy is getting worse, similar to the prior week. The shift came from Independents (66%, up from 56%) and Republicans (24%, up from 18%). Within the GOP, both MAGA and non-MAGA voters also reported higher concern week over week.
- 😔 Debbie Downer - Concern is showing up in other areas, too. Around 30% now expect to be worse off financially in a year, up from 23% the week before. Optimism also took a dip with 23% expecting to be better off, down from 25%.
