Just when you thought companies were done expanding in the Buckeye State, here comes Google again! 🖥️
The tech giant recently announced they're adding two new data centers to help boost their efforts in the artificial intelligence space. 🤖💰 Will the employees be fully robotic? We'll let you know.
Here’s Five Fast Facts on the new project:
- 💵 Savvy Investment - Google's building the two new data centers in Columbus and Lancaster. This project brings the company's total investment in Ohio to over $2 billion.
- 🧑💻 That's a Whole Lotta Data - Google broke ground in 2019 on a data center in New Albany. The two new additions bring the total Ohio data center count to three. The company also has 24 data centers in 13 states and nine countries worldwide.
- 🗺️ Recalculating Route - In addition to boosting Google's AI innovation projects, the data centers will help power up the tools people use every day, like their search engine, Gmail, and Google Maps.
- 💼 You're Hired! - Each data center typically employs around 50 people, and some of the other sites around the country employ hundreds of workers.
- 🤬 Not a Fan - Data centers aren't exactly everyone's favorite. They run on a massive amount of electricity and rely on high-voltage transmission lines. Google plopped a big group of data centers in northern Virginia and residents there complain about constant noise from the fans needed to keep the equipment cool.
🔥Bottom line: Facebook and Amazon already have data centers in the Columbus metro area, and now Google's adding more. Companies have been investing heavily in the Buckeye state, including big names like Honda and Abbott Labs. Even some startups are setting up shop. Let's hope these new projects create good jobs…for humans. Sorry, bots.
