Ever catch yourself sitting alone in your room, wondering how things got to be so dark? 🥴🌧️ Well, we’re bringing you the light. Actually, we’re just reminding you to pay the electric bill. 🤪💸
For many Americans, that’s easier said than done. Utility bills are higher than Snoop hitting the green on top of Mount Everest. ⛷️ And in PA where energy production is also sky-high, you’d think that would lower bills. Let’s look into why that’s not exactly the case. 👀
Here’s Five Fast Facts on PA, energy, and electric bills:
- 📈 The Price is Wrong - The U.S. is cranking out more energy than ever, but electricity isn’t getting cheaper. Prices are rising in cities across the country, including 25% in Pittsburgh, 45% in Chicago, and 23% in Richmond. That’s putting more pressure on household budgets.
- 💡 High Demand - PA produces a lot of energy and exports more electricity than any other state. But that hasn’t lowered costs for residents, because demand is growing even faster. More energy use at home and from data centers is pushing the system to its limits.
- ⚡ Off the Grid - The grid serving much of the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest is managed by PJM Interconnection, which supplies power to over 65 million people. It produced slightly more electricity than was used last year, but demand is putting the heat on rates.
- 🔌 Giga-What? - There’s a split on what needs to happen next. Some say the focus should be on building more infrastructure, while PJM works to speed up project approvals and connections. That being said, most capacity is still in limbo. Only 23 of 103 gigawatts approved since 2020 are online, with 54 delayed.
- 🤹 Mixed Bag - The strategy is to use a little bit of everything without leaning too heavily on any one source. Natural gas has grown to more than 58% of the state’s energy mix, up from about 30% a decade ago. State officials are now looking more closely at solar and storage.
🔥Bottom line: Ya know what, we’re just gonna shut all the lights off and kick it old school. Is Yankee Candle having any sales? As energy prices keep rising, some PA lawmakers are brainstorming solutions. Check out this article for the latest on the plans up their sleeves.
