Is This Third Year a Charm for a PA Minimum Wage Hike?

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?🤔🦫 Has anyone really done the math on it? We’d guess about three log piles worth. Hopefully, not at anyone’s head. 🪵🤕

It’s feelin’ a little like Groundhog Day over here, with PA lawmakers bubbling up yet another bill to hike minimum wage.💰 Will this year be the year it finally goes through? Let’s look at the latest happenings.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on PA’s latest minimum wage bill:

  1. 💸 Sticky Salary - Pennsylvania’s minimum wage has been stuck in the early 2000s…literally. It’s still $7.25 an hour, but a new bill would raise it to $15. That would be a long-overdue boost for workers.
  1. 🪜 Step By Step - Instead of one big jump, the bill phases in the increase over time. The minimum wage would go up to $11 in 2027, $13 in 2028, and $15 by 2029. After that, it would rise automatically with the cost of living.
  2. 🚀 Fast Track - The bill would also give counties the option to move faster and reach the $15 minimum wage before 2029. It also sets pay for tipped workers at 60% of the statewide minimum wage. In other words, their base pay would rise alongside the overall increase.
  1. 3️⃣ Three’s Company - This is the third year in a row the House has approved a $15 minimum wage bill. But it hasn’t made it through the GOP-controlled Senate, which has rejected it twice. Republicans say higher wages could lead to higher business costs and prices.
  1. ✍️ Signed, Sealed, Delivered - Gov. Josh Shapiro is on board, saying he would sign the bill if it clears the Senate. He’s repeatedly highlighted that neighboring states already have higher minimum wages. The gap has been a main piece of his budget agenda.

🔥Bottom line: All large rodent jokes aside, we’re just a bunch of rats trying to get our paws on some cheddar! A minimum wage increase is a step in the right direction. PA lawmakers aren’t just busy trying to get you an extra buck. Some also want to slash your electric bill. Woo-hoo! Curious about their grand plans? Check out this article for all the details.
