Looking for Work? Move to Minnesota!

The Democrat-controlled state legislature has passed a sweeping agenda, creating a jaw-dropping amount of state jobs. There’s one catch: those jobs require people. Since we’re in the tightest labor market in the history of our state, it’s not going to be easy.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on the State’s Hiring Woes:

  1. 💴 Just Grand  - One lawmaker estimates they’ll need to hire more than 1000 people over the course of the next few years.
  2. 📈 Want Ad - New jobs include 400 employees by 2026 for the paid family and medical leave program, a commissioner and more than 200 workers to oversee the legalized marijuana industry, and hundreds more to run other new or expanded programs.
  3. 🍇 Sour Grapes? - Republican lawmakers say this job growth is a bad thing, claiming it will hurt jobs in the private sector. I thought job creation was their benchmark for success? What gives?
  4. 🦫 Private Priority - Democrats say that private sector jobs are still more attractive because they’re not bound by strict state requirements. Many state jobs are in-person and have pesky no-fun rules around pay fairness and transparency.
  5. 😮‍💨 Pretty Policies - As for attracting new employees from out of state? One lawmaker points to a batch of new laws that include improved health and childcare, labor policies, legal weed, and even codified abortion rights

🔥Bottom line: Since the pandemic hit, there’s been a lot of bellyaching about how no one wants to work anymore. Minnesota’s packed employment landscape says otherwise. The best part is the situation is going to put a lot of power in the hands of applicants. Employers in the private sector are really going to have to step up their game if they want the best and brightest.
