American hospitals and healthcare systems in rural areas have been feeling the burn of fed cuts and a lack of funding. 😰 New money’s on the way to Ohio, but is it enough?
Here’s Five Fast Facts on rural healthcare and funding in Ohio:
- 🏥 Fund Run - Rural healthcare systems across the U.S. are riding the struggle bus and Ohio is no exception. To give people better access and prevent hospital closures, $202 million in new federal funding is heading to the Buckeye State.
- 🥕 Homegrown Health - Medicaid cuts are to blame for a lot of rural healthcare issues. According to recent data, the cuts in Ohio are expected to be around $33 billion over the next 10 years.
- 🆘 Help Wanted - Last year, Trump signed the five-year Rural Health Transformation Program into law to help offset the Medicaid cuts. Through the program, a total of $50 billion in funding will be distributed nationwide.
- 🩹 Band Aid Blues - While this latest round of funding is a positive, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle don’t think it’s enough. Critics feel that broader federal cuts will continue to have an impact and this might just be a band aid on a bigger problem.
- 🩺 Life Support - Roughly 4.4 million Ohioans live in what are considered rural areas. Three rural hospitals have closed since 2010 and today, another 10 are at risk. One in four Ohio hospitals operated at a loss in 2023.
🔥Bottom line: The rural healthcare issues plaguing the nation will continue to impact Americans until a solution is found. Let’s hope Uncle Sam digs deeper into those pockets. If Ohio’s been spending so much money on job creation, why are people jumping ship? Head to this article to find out why!
