OH Legal Weed Brings Big Checks to Cities & Towns

Still snowed in? 🥶 Hopefully you stocked up on groceries…and the green stuff! Of course, we’re talking about kale. 🥬 And by packing a bowl, we mean getting a second helping of veggie soup. 😋

Ohio’s legal weed program has been rolling along for the last couple of years. Now, cities and towns are getting big checks to make improvements. 🥳

Here’s Five Fast Facts on cannabis sales and the payback in Ohio:

  1. 🤑 Toker Tax - Thanks to Ohio’s taxes on recreational marijuana, several of the state's towns and cities are getting big kickbacks. In 2023, voters said “yes” to a 10% tax on cannabis products. That money gets funneled back into locations with dispensaries.
  1. 😎 High Rollers - The first checks totaled an impressive $33M. In Piqua, their $438,000 check will go towards sprucing up the city’s parks. The tiny town of Seven Mile Village got a $400,000 check to use for improvements, a butt ton more than their $75,000 annual budget!
  2. 🫴 Bandwagon Fans - This new round of hefty checks may be enough to get more cities and towns to let dispensaries set up shop. With that much extra cash to claim, we’ll likely see more municipalities jump on board.
  1. 🏪 Talking Shop - Right now, Ohio has 176 marijuana dispensaries spread across the state. And there’s room for plenty more. Current Ohio law allows for up to 400 to set up shop.
  2. 💸 Lower Limits - When lawmakers were kicking around how much tax to place on cannabis, they considered going as high as 20%. They dialed it back after realizing taxes that high (pun intended) could lead people to get their green illegally instead.

🔥Bottom line: Whether you’re an all day smoker or a never toker, Ohio’s legal weed program benefits everyone! If you’ve got a bad case of the munchies, you may be tempted to buy a pallet’s worth of tortilla chips from Costco. And according to this article, that might not be a bad idea!
