They’re not quite slot machines, but some want to treat PA’s skill games the same way, especially in the tax department. 💰 However, some people aren’t fans and we’ve got the latest scoop on the scuffle. 👇
Here’s Five Fast Facts on skill games in PA:
- 🃏 Regulate Debate - PA's debate over skill games is shifting from whether they should be regulated to how much they should be taxed. Some lawmakers proposed tax rates as high as 52%.
- 💸 Money Moves - The disagreement boils down to who should benefit most from skill game revenue. Supporters of higher taxes say the machines represent a significant opportunity to raise money for the state, while opponents argue much of that revenue currently helps support local businesses and community groups.
- 🚨 Illegal Activity - After years of operating without state regulation, the PA Supreme Court ruled the machines are illegal under current law. Instead of immediately shutting them down, the court gave lawmakers 120 days to come up with a solution.
- 🎭 Skill Game Stand Off - The biggest obstacle to regulating skill games has been the tax rate. Previous budget talks ended without a deal as lawmakers debated proposals ranging from 16% to 35%. Casino operators pushed for a 55% rate similar to their own tax structure.
- 🛣️ Alternate Route - There’s more than one way to raise revenue from skill games. One proposal would charge a $500 monthly fee per machine, a plan supporters say would still generate about $300M a year.
