Pay to Play: Stats on Kids’ Sports Spending

Play ball! We love a little league game in early June. 😎⚽ Family fun, gossiping with the moms on the bleachers…what’s not to love? Oh yeah, and there might be a little wine in that Stanley. 🍷

If your kids are involved in sports, costs are rising just like they are in every other part of the household budget. 💸 Let’s dive into how much some parents are forking over.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on children’s sports spending:

  1. 🤑 Grand Slam - Youth sports are starting to come with a car-payment-sized price tag. Families spent an average of $1,016 on a child's primary sport in 2024, plus another $475 on additional activities, bringing the annual total to nearly $1,500 per kid.
  1. ⛹️ Teen Titans - The older the athlete, the bigger the bill. Families spent nearly $2,000 a year on teen athletes. Since 2019, the cost of baseball jumped from $660 to $1,113, soccer from $537 to $910, and basketball from $427 to $876.
  2. ✈️ All the Extras - For many families, the biggest expense isn't the sport itself, it's everything else that comes with it. Travel teams can mean tournament fees, hotel stays, private coaching, training programs, and a calendar that starts looking more like a business trip than a youth activity.
  1. 🧒 For the Kids - The reason families keep paying isn't necessarily because they're expecting a Division I scholarship. For many parents, sports are about keeping kids active, building confidence, making friends, and giving them something positive to be part of.
  1. 👛 Cutting Corners - Not every young athlete needs a travel schedule that rivals a touring musician. Community leagues, used equipment, and a mix of competitive and recreational play can often scratch the same sports itch at a fraction of the cost.

🔥Bottom line: If a full-on Dance Moms lifestyle isn’t for your family, don’t go chasin’ waterfalls. Please stick to the local activities you’re used to.
