Summer’s right around the corner, and honestly, we’re afraid to take a peek! 🫣 With the cost of everyday staples on the rise, we just hope price hikes don’t come for our cookout essentials. We need our comfort hot dogs more than ever. 🌭🤠
Prices might be going up, but you know what? It could be worse. Let’s take a look at affordability in the Peach State and the policies working to keep things peachy-keen. 🍑✌️
Here’s Five Fast Facts on hot affordability topics in Georgia:
- 🏡 Let’s Make a Deal - Good news for Georgia house hunters. Almost 70% of homes statewide sold below asking price in 2025, with buyers grabbing an average 7% discount. Realtors say it's the strongest buyer's market in 13 years.
- 💸 A Billion Back - Gov. Kemp also signed big tax relief earlier this spring. The plan sends more than $1 billion back to taxpayers ($250 for single filers, $375 for heads of household, and $500 for joint filers). A separate $850 million property tax grant should knock about $500 off the typical home bill.
- ⛽ Pump Bump - Take one look at a Georgia gas station sign and you'll feel the burn. Prices have shot well past $4 a gallon at many pumps. The Iran war shut down the Strait of Hormuz, which carries about one in every five barrels of oil worldwide. Less oil moving around means higher prices everywhere.
- 😎 If We Took a Holiday - Back in March, Kemp signed a 60-day gas tax holiday to ease the pressure. The break has been saving drivers about 33 cents per gallon. Truckers have been saving around 37 cents on diesel. Without that help, today's already-painful prices would have another third of a dollar tacked on.
- 🛢️ Homegrown Heroes - The US pumps more oil than ever before, and only about 3% of what Americans use comes from the Persian Gulf. Trump also tapped the country's emergency oil supply, releasing 172 million barrels. Without those backups, gas would feel a whole lot worse.
🔥Bottom line: We know saying “it could be worse” doesn’t put money back into your pocket, but the policies at play might do more heavy lifting than you think!
